a. Web page

It is a hypertext document that contains information and can be accessed on the WWW by using a Web browser. The markup languages that are used to create Web pages are HTML or XHTML. A Web page also contains hyperlinks, which help the user to navigate to and access information from other Web pages. These pages can be retrieved from a computer connected to a remote Web server by using Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP).

b. Web browser

It refers to a software application that is used to retrieve, traverse or represent information resources on the WWW. An information resource can be a video, an audio or textual information. These resources are identified over the Internet by using the Uniform Resource Locator (URL). A Web browser is specifically designed for accessing the WWW, but it can also be used to access resources on the local intranet or files in a file system.

c. Web Server

It refers to a computer programme that serves a Web page, whenever a client requests for the Web page on the WWW. The Web server uses HTTP for serving Web pages. In other words, the Web server is a virtual machine that executes programmes. It translates the URL path components into either a local file system or a programme name. In 1990, Tim Berners–Lee developed the first Web server, CERN http, which was executed on the NeXTSTEP computer (a multitasking operating system, developed by NeXT Computer). In 1994, Tim Berners–Lee again formulated the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to regulate all the developments of technologies regarding the WWW.

d. Website

It refers to a collection of Web pages, images, videos and audios. It may either consist of a domain name or an IP address on a protocol based network. A website is generally hosted by at least one Web server, which is accessible through the Internet or the private local area network. A website can be static or dynamic in nature. The content of a static website does not change frequently, whereas the content of a dynamic website is automatically updated on a regular basis.
